New Year: New Employment Perspective

As we begin 2021, many continue to struggle with job insecurity caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite the early roll-out of vaccines, it’s still unknown when life as we know it will get back to normal.

While job seekers continue to battle with uncertainty, the job market is slowly and surely beginning to brighten.

At the beginning of the pandemic, the number of workers directly affected by the COVID-19 economic shutdown peaked at 5.5 million. By October, that number was down to 1.1 million.

According to a recently released StatsCan report, the employment sector has increased by 84,000 (+0.5%) jobs from April to October.

The Atlantic provinces are up as well.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, upwards of 5,900 jobs were created in October. Employment was also up in Prince Edward Island by more than 900 new jobs created. In New Brunswick, employment levels are almost back to their pre-COVID February levels.

In Nova Scotia, Halifax averaged 243,900 jobs during the months of September, October and November which is 1,600 more jobs than the same time period in 2019.

As Atlantic Canadians, we are strong. We are resilient. And we will bounce back.

In fact - we already have.
